Desert Dingo Racing is a team that participates in off-road desert races with their slightly-modified 1969 VW Beetle. They are a group of Burners with more than one PhD on the team, plus a crusty old hippie who’s been building race cars since the 70′s. I was fortunate to catch up with them in Las Vegas at the 2014 Mint 400 as they wrenched, signed autographs, talked passionately about their love of racing and unity as a team, and ultimately took off along with hundreds of other off-road vehicles into the dusty Nevada desert. I last saw their Beetle as they left their final pit stop on their final lap. Miles later, they got hit by another truck, blew their transmission, and were hopelessly stuck in the sand. They were stranded for the next 12 hours on a part of the course appropriately called “no-man’s land,” until they were eventually located and rescued. And so is the life of a Desert Dingo…
